With NAFTA it was most likely made in Mexico along with most other steel work used in the US now. Either way, its more a question of physics. The mass of a full size pickup and say 30 foot trailer is quite large, and then is compounded considering it clips the point with the most leverage. These center post awnings are common since they reduce the number of legs that can be hit. One strength turns into another weakness.

The story claims "Somehow he was able to unbuckle the seat beat and exit the other side of his truck as it was falling".
If he's dim enough to ram the roof, he wouldn't be capable of unbuckling a seatbelt in 0.2 seconds. He probably wasn't wearing one and wanted to avoid a further ticket.
